When someone searches for an electrician or HVAC contractor, they need permission from the state to hire you. That credential matters more than a five-star review. Yet most contractor websites bury license numbers or don't display them at all. Your local search ranking and conversion rate both depend on making verification effortless—before the phone rings.

License Number Display Becomes Structured Data

Google's schema markup for LocalBusiness now includes a field for license identification. When you add your state license number and issuing authority to your site's JSON-LD, search engines index it as a trust signal. A homeowner searching for a plumber in your service area sees your name, phone, and that you're verified by the state licensing board—all in one place.

The difference: a contractor page without license markup looks generic. One with markup looks official. Search rankings favor pages that reduce friction for verification-minded searchers. You're answering the question before they have to ask.

Where to Put It on the Page

Don't hide licensing information in footer text. Put it above the fold on your homepage or in a dedicated "About Us" section. Searchers use their phone to find you during an emergency or quick decision. If they have to scroll or click three times to find proof you're licensed, they've already moved to your competitor's site.

A homeowner's first question is never about price. It's whether you can legally do the work. Make that answer visible in ten seconds.

Combine License Display with Bonding and Insurance

License verification alone isn't enough. Bonding and liability insurance are separate trust signals that belong on the same page. A bonded contractor can compensate a homeowner if the work goes wrong. Insurance protects both parties. These aren't marketing copy—they're legal requirements that searchers actively look for.

Add a section that shows all three: license status, bond information, and current insurance carrier. Include the effective dates. If you carry additional certifications (EPA RoHS, NATE, HVAC Excellence), list them here too. Each certification is another reason a searcher stays on your page instead of bouncing to a competitor.

How This Affects Your Local Ranking

Google's local ranking factors include trustworthiness and authority in your service category. A contractor with license verification signals on-page matches two of those factors directly. You're telling Google and searchers: "I've passed state requirements, I'm current on renewals, and you can verify me independently." That reduces perceived risk.

Conversely, if your license has expired or isn't visible, you've created friction at the moment someone decides whether to call. They move on. Local search visibility matters only if it converts. License verification converts because it answers the first real question.
